Many of us wanted to become when we were little the superheroes that we saw on screen. And it is very modern and it is very urgent because of the way we connect the imagination with reality. Reading chivalry novels defines his days, and at one point, his imagination runs loose and he becomes one of the heroes in one of those novels. STAVANS: This is a book about a man who, at age 50, has run out of ideas, probably run out of energy to live and devotes his entire life just to read. What is it about that premise that is so modern and so novel in the history of literature? SIEGEL: The "Quixote," which, I gather, is what serious literary people call the book, is the story of a Spanish gentleman taken with romances about chivalrous knights who sets out to become one centuries after such knights truly lived, if ever. In 1615, Miguel de Cervantes published part two of "Don Quixote." Ilan Stavans, professor of Latin American and Latino culture at Amherst College, joins us now. A few years ago, the Norwegian Academy polled 100 writers, and they voted "Don Quixote" the best novel of all time. Stavans is not alone in his love for that book. That is the central tenet of "Don Quixote," according to Professor Ilan Stavans. One must live life in a genuine way, passionately, in spite of what other people think.

Then, in the early nineteenth century, American missionaries arrive, bringing with them a new creed and a new way of life. As the volcanic Hawaiian Islands sprout from the ocean floor, the land remains untouched for centuries-until, little more than a thousand years ago, Polynesian seafarers make the perilous journey across the Pacific, flourishing in this tropical paradise according to their ancient traditions. Michener brings Hawaii's epic history vividly to life in a classic saga that has captivated readers since its initial publication in 1959. Going deeper though, I didn’t write with the intent to publish until 2007, when the tale that began as a recurring nightmare I had at age 13 finally blossomed into words and formed a cohesive, interwoven novel. It was my childhood dream, and I’d turn in stories at school just for the teacher’s critique. The easy answer is that I’ve always been a writer. Arnett is that rare, brave writer willing to articulate the darkest thoughts even the best parents entertain while trudging along through the most challenging job in the world. Again and again, we’re reminded that Sammie’s hermetically sealed understanding of her dismal situation is not necessarily complete-or even correct. It’s just a fleeting switch in perspective, easy to discount, but oddly base-shifting if you pay attention. But between every chapter, the novel offers one-page moments, each from a different minor character’s point of view. Arnett’s sympathetic attention to the cascading flow of Sammy’s depression is heartbreaking. Arnett conjures up the disturbing mixture of devotion and alienation endured by anyone raising a child they don’t understand, don’t even like. Absolutely captivating and scathingly frank, it’s a story of motherhood stripped of every ribbon of sentimentality. the perfect baby shower gift for someone you hate. I had an anthropology professor, so you could say a person, I don’t even remember his name he was talking about matrilineal societies only in order to basically say that it didn’t matter if societies were matrilineal or not because all societies have always been male dominated. So that was my starting point was to research that.
